Aleo Covi is a Christian artist creating cute, colorful creature-based art that explores metaphysical, psychological, and technological themes.

His work is rooted in an unusual personal journey. During a period of severe mental illness, instability, and homelessness, Aleo came to believe that he possessed a spiritual mission as a prophet. Recovery required him to reconsider those experiences, rebuild his understanding of faith, and learn to distinguish spiritual meaning from the distortions of illness. He now describes himself as a former false prophet not to sensationalize that chapter of his life, but to acknowledge it honestly, and to explore the questions it left behind.

Those questions became part of the foundation for Budibaji, Aleo’s evolving universe of curious creatures, adorable monsters, mysterious machines, and other nonhuman beings. Although the characters are bright, playful, and often comforting, their stories engage with subjects such as mental illness, consciousness, artificial intelligence, loneliness, identity, suffering, friendship, recovery, and transcendence.

Aleo is especially interested in using nonhuman characters to approach experiences that can be difficult to represent through conventional human figures. His creatures may enter psychiatric hospitals, encounter incomprehensible technologies, search for God, comfort one another, or stand beneath vast cosmic phenomena. Their cuteness is not intended to make these subjects trivial. Instead, it creates an inviting emotional language through which vulnerability and mystery can coexist.

Working across painting, illustration, and animation, Aleo hopes to build Budibaji into a world that audiences can encounter in many forms. He develops character narratives, atmospheric scenes, and speculative worlds that can eventually extend into books, films, games, and immersive experiences.

At the center of Aleo’s practice is the belief that playful art can still carry serious meaning. Budibaji allows him to transform painful experiences into strange and uplifting encounters, and to imagine creatures who face the unknown without losing their capacity for wonder.
